Road Tests

Our registry is happy to offer a variety of knowledge and road testing options to suit your needs.

Knowledge Tests:

-No appointment is necessary to write a knowledge test. Just come into the registry between 8:30am and 4:00pm Monday-Friday.

Class 7 Knowledge Test:

-You must be at least 14 years old to write your class 7 knowledge test.

-Please bring 2 pieces or government issued ID:

-Alberta Health Care Card
-Birth Certificate
-Valid Passport

-If you are under 18, we will require a parent to accompany you to the office for your test, to complete and sign the parental consent form. Please Note: this form must be completed in a registry. If a parent cannot be present at the time of application please call us to determine a course of action.

– Proof of Alberta Residency. Some examples include:

-Electronic utility, gas, or cable bills that are current within the last 90 days.

-Original mailed bank statements, credit card statements, cell phone bill, or income tax assessment summary current within the last 90 days.

-If you don’t pass the first time, a parent does not have to accompany you as long as you have the two pieces of ID and the signed parental consent form.

-If English is not your first language, the class 7 knowledge test is available in the following languages:

-Amharic, Arabic, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (traditional), Cree, Dutch, Farsi, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Korean, Oromo, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Thai, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

-Oral exams are also available if you have written before, but would benefit from having a registry agent sit with you to read the questions and the answers.

-Please Note: We conduct oral exams in the morning, when we are fully staffed, so please call ahead so we can ensure we are available.

-Once you have passed the knowledge test you must also pass a vision screening. If you need glasses or contacts, please make sure you have them when you come for your test.

Airbrake and SFC Knowledge Test

-To receive an airbrake endorsement, or condition code Q on your driver’s license, you must first take the airbrake course from an accredited institution and then come into the registry with the Airbrake course certificate of completion to write your airbrake knowledge test. If you pass we can add the Q endorsement to your license right away, or if you are upgrading your license you can wait, and add the Q endorsement at the same time.

-To write the SFC Compliance knowledge test you must bring in the letter from Alberta Transportation naming the authorized individual for the company, and proof of identity.

-The Airbrake and SFC Compliance knowledge tests are available 8:30-4 Monday to Friday. These tests are only available in English and are not available with headphones or a reader.

Class 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 knowledge test:
-To write your knowledge test, come into the office between 8:30am and 4:00pm Monday-Friday. If you do not pass you may write the test once a day. These knowledge tests are only available in English and are not available with headphones or a reader.
-If you are writing the class 1 or 2 knowledge test you must complete the MELT training prior to writing the knowledge test.
Road Testing

-Effective March 1, 2019 the Government of Alberta oversees and administers Road Tests. What does this mean for you?

-Standardized fees across the province
-Centralized booking system. You can book and pay online to save yourself the time of coming in to the office.

-Please make sure you choose Freeman Insurance Agencies Ltd. if you wish to complete your test with us.
-If you are required to take a road test by the government (due to a medical condition), are under suspension, or you are unsure if you are eligible for the class of road test, please come in to the office and we can help you out.

-Prior to your road test please be aware of the following:

-You must be in the office within 30 minutes prior to the start of your road test so that we can confirm your eligibility and check you in. The check in must occur at the registry office your road test is scheduled at. If this is not done, your road test will not proceed and you will be required to rebook and repay the full price of the exam.
-If you are taking a Class 1 or 3 road test that is starting at an off-site location, you can check in for your road test 72 hours prior to your road test at any registry location.
-If you are late for your test, it will not proceed. You will be required to rebook and repay the full price of the exam.
-If you have to cancel or re-book your test, it must be done at least 24 hours in advance. If you cancel your exam within 24 hours there will be no refund.
-Ensure your vehicle is in proper working order with an adequate amount of fuel prior to your test. Double check your insurance and registration are valid, and your licence plate is on the vehicle.
-You must meet all eligibility requirements in order to proceed with your road test. If you are unsure of your eligibility, feel free to come in and we can confirm your eligibility prior to the 24 hour cancellation window.

Class 1:

-Permits an operator to drive:

-Any motor vehicle, or combination of motor vehicles other than a motorcycle.
-Any class 6 vehicles as a learner only.

-The minimum learning or licensing age is 18. You must hold a valid non-GDL class 5 licence

-Requirements

-Pass the MELT training course
-Pass the Class 1 knowledge test
-Airbrake certificate
-Vision Screening
-Medical Report

-Vehicle Required for road test:

-Manual tractor-trailer combination with three or more axles and equipped with airbrakes.

Class 2:

-Permits an operator to drive:

-Any motor vehicle, or combination of motor vehicle that a holder of a class 3, 4, and 5 operator’s license may operate.
-Any Bus
-Class 1 and 6 type vehicles as a learner only

-The minimum learning or licencing age is 18. You must hold a valid non-GDL class 5 licence.

-Requirements:

-Pass the MELT training course
-Pass the Class 2 knowledge test
-Airbrake certificate (for vehicles with airbrake)
-Vision Screening
-Medical Report

-Vehicle required for road test:

-A bus with seating capacity exceeding 24 excluding the operator. If the vehicle provided is equipped with airbrakes, you must have the Airbrake endorsement on your driver’s licence or provide an Air Brake Endorsement Certificate.

Class 3:

-Permits an operator to drive:

-Any motor vehicle, or combination of vehicles that the holder of a class 5 operator’s license may operate.

-A single motor vehicle with three or more axles.

-A motor vehicle with three or more axles towing a trailer with one or more axles, if the trailer is not equipped with airbrakes.

-Class 2 and 4 type vehicles without passengers.

-All motor vehicles included under class 1, 2, and 6 for learning only.

-A holder of a class 3 license cannot:

-Operate a motor vehicle that has a seating capacity of more than 15, while that vehicle is transporting any person, including the operator.

-Transport any passengers for hire.

-The minimum learning or licensing age is 18.

-Requirements:

-Vision screening
-Written and road test
-Airbrake certificate (if the vehicle is equipped with airbrakes).

-Vehicle for road test:

-Any single motor vehicle having three or more axles.

Class 4:

-Permits an operator to drive:

-A taxi, ambulance, or bus (including school or kindergarten busses) where seating capacity is not over 25 people including the operator.

-All motor vehicles included under class 5.

-All motor vehicles included under class 1, 2, 3, and 6 as a learner only.

-The minimum licensing age is 18.

-Requirements:

-Vision screening
-Written test
-Medical report

-A road test if the operator does not already have a class 1, 2, or 3 license.

-Vehicle for road test:

-Any two-axle vehicle, excluding a motorcycle.

Class 5:

-Permits an operator to drive:

-A two-axle, single motor vehicle excluding a motorcycle.

-A two-axle single motor vehicle towing a trailer with one or more axles, if the trailer is not equipped with airbrakes.

-A recreational vehicle, or any combination of recreational vehicle and trailer, if the trailer has no more than two axles and is not equipped with airbrakes.

-A moped.

-A class 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 type vehicle as a learner, if the learner is 18 years of age and is accompanied by a supervisor with a valid license for that class of vehicle.

-A holder of a class 5 license cannot:

-Operate a motor vehicle that has a seating capacity of more than 15 while the vehicle is transporting any person including the operator.

-Transport people for hire.

-The minimum learning age is 14.

-The minimum licensing age is 16.

-Requirements:

-Road Test
-Vision Screening
-Parental Consent if under the age of 18

-Vehicle for road test:

-Any two-axle motor vehicle, excluding a motorcycle.

Class 6:

-Permits an operator to drive:

-A motorcycle

-A moped

-Any motor vehicle under class 5 for learning only.

-The minimum learning and licensing age is 16.

-Requirements:

-Written Test
-Road Test
-Vision Screening

-Parental consent if under the age of 18

-Vehicle required for road test:

-A motorcycle without a sidecar.

Class 7:

-Permits an operator to drive:

-A moped

-Any vehicle in the class 5 category as a learner only.

-A motorcycle as a learner only if the operator is at least 16.

-The minimum licensing age is 14.

-Requirements:

-Written test
-Vision screening

-Parental consent if under the age of 18.
